HIGHLIGHTS:     

The Department of Chinese is the only department under the School of Languages and Literature, Sikkim University in the whole of the Northeast of India which offers the following full-fledged Degree and Certificate course programmes in Chinese; namely, 3 Years of BA (Honours), 2 Years of MA, 5 Years of PhD and 6 Months/1 Semester Certificate Course in Chinese.

Founded in July 2010, the Department has since run a comprehensive academic programme in intensive Modern Chinese language training as well as in Chinese Studies. The curricula for the BA-MA programme have been designed by distinguished Sinologists from some of the most reputed universities across the country, namely Jawaharlal Nehru University, University of Delhi, Visva-Bharati University, and Banaras Hindu University.

The courses offered here are well tailored to suit the academic and professional requirements of universities, institutions, and think tanks, both at the national and global level. 

The Department fosters high-end research on China (ancient, modern, and contemporary) with major focus on modern and classical Chinese language. It envisions creating and nurturing a community of experts on Chinese language, culture, society, and politics with the objective of promoting meaningful conversations between the peoples of the two countries.
